Fume Extractors
Snorkels are used to capture fumes and particulates at the place of emission. The snorkel is located near the emission source to capture and eliminate contaminants from the air. Based on the type of fume extractor, the contaminants are either captured in a filter, vented outside or contained and extracted by an attached hooded enclosure. The majority of snorkels located on campus are mounted to the wall. There are two portable snorkels located in areas where flexibility of movement is required. Annually, EH&S inspects snorkels to ensure the capture velocity measures a minimum of 100 cubic feet per minute and performs a visual inspection of filters. Contact EH&S to obtain the most recent inspection data.
